Maybe it's in a how-to or something I missed, but if not perhaps the moderators could find a way to give it more prominence in case others have the problem.

The install sequence is somewhat counter-intuitive to me, and it took me a while to find it. When done correctly the guest log will have a DriverEntry: "VBox WDDM Driver for Windows Vista and 7", (32 bit in my case), and the guest Device Manager will show "VirtualBox Graphics Adapter for Windows Vista and 7"

Then reboot the guest and install the guest additions *not* in safe mode, selecting the 3D check box and answer no to the d3d drivers and you will instead install the WDDM driver."

Just boot the guest in safe mode and remove the guest additions. "The easiest way to fix this if you have installed the 3D drivers in safe mode is to remove them before you upgrade. I found the method that ultimately worked in this forum, in the following paragraph: My problem had been failure to correctly install the VirtualBox WDDM driver in Guest Additions. In any case, I was finally able to solve the problem, and enable Aero effects and transparency in the Win7 guest. Has anyone gotten this combination of hardware, VirtualBox and Windows 7 with Aero to work? If so how, and which graphics drivers on the host and the guest? And if not, is it known that it doesn't work?įirst I will acknowledge that I had failed to provide "Minimum information needed for assistance.", which I picked up only after my first posting. I've basically tried every combination of host and guest drivers I can think of, and I either get a message in Windows that my current driver doesn't support WDDM, and/or a WEI for graphics of 1.0, and no transparency. At first I thought I had to use the VirtualBox direct 3D driver in the Windows guest, found out that's not correct as it gives a message "WDDM not provided" in the guest, so I removed and reinstalled VBoxWindowsAdditions-x86.exe /with_wddm option. My problem is that I can't get WEI graphics and gaming graphics over 1.0, and this can't get Windows Aero and transparency on the guest. I installed the VirtualBox 4.2.16 VirtualBox Extension Pack and guest additions. On the host I've tried three different Radeon graphics drivers: one labelled "ATI Fire GL", which I think is open source and provides "2D display drivers and hardware accelerated OpenGL", an "experimental 3D-accelerated proprietary driver for AMD" from the Ubuntu repositories (I think it's a QA'd version of AMD Catalyst Version 12.11) and the downloaded/compiled Catalyst 13.6 Beta proprietary drivers from AMD (I must admit the AMD/ATI linux driver situation is very confusing to me). I have a system with MSI FM2-A85XMA-E35 motherboard (uses AMD A85X (Hudson D4) chipset, AMD A8-5600K CPU/GPU (Radeon HD 7560D GPU), running Kubuntu 13.04 host OS, VirtualBox 4.2.16 r86992 and Windows 7 SP1 guest.
